#25 – Falls City Taproom (Louisville, KY)

The best picture I could get

The best picture I could get

My final night in Kentucky and the plans were to do it big. I wanted to start the night off at the newly opened Falls City Taproom. Falls City is one of my favorite local beers and it had been months since I had one. The plan was to get a group of people together and enjoy the evening before we went to see our friends in the band Houndmouth perform a hometown show at Headliners.

IMG_3739

I was with my former roommate and his girlfriend at first due to some last minute backouts. Hellbent on checking this place come hell or highwater, we mapquested it(does anyone even use mapquest anymore or is that just a term forever etched in our brains?) and went off the beaten path. I was sure that this place was on Bardstown Road but I was mistaken. It was actually in a little building in what didn’t look like the most densely populated of areas. This was no concern to me.

20131129_182559

We headed in and order some sample drinks. There was barely anyone in the place so it didn’t seem weird that the bartender didn’t ask us for cash. But after a few rounds of sample beers and more friends showing up we still we not getting charged. Finally, my friend from California bit the bullet and went and asked the price of the beers. Turns out, the Taproom didn’t have some sort of license or something so they technically weren’t allowed to sell beers. That’s right, this place is so awesome, drinks are FREE.

IMG_3738

After feeling we had extended our welcome and Marty’s girlfriend weirding us out by the lack of customers, we headed to Bardstown Rd. before heading to the concert.

Weatherby Home For The Holidays

Week-long entries are always the hardest to write. There is so much detail that needs to be encapsulated its worrisome that something might easily be forgotten. There are too many pictures that need explanation and too many memories that will probably be lost. With that said, I will begin this story as many of my stories begin. A headache from the night before…

So I’m sitting on the plane just wanting to get some rest and an attractive older lady sits next to me and says she is going to Louisville. Interesting as this is the first leg of my flight. So as a fellow Kentuckian, I act as a gentleman and entertain conversation. She begins to tell me that she is recently divorced so I start to emphasize with the woman. My friendliness eventually leads me down a path I don’t want to go down. The woman starts to become dissociative and even seriously considers me as a potential future roommate. Sleep is not found on the first flight nor the second due to the excessively large lady sitting next to me, the obnoxiously loud man snoring and the screaming baby. Typical

20131123_222539

So the plane lands, I do my typical Kentucky routine: Ale8, Mingua Brothers Jerky, Franks Produce shop and then stop at Marty’s. Marty’s, my former roommate, house is the rendezvous point for the immediate Nashville trip. As soon as Chris arrives we head to Tennessee to do it right.

IMG_3661

We meet up with some friends before we go out and get some food. The thing about Nashville is that in the few hours I was there, I had three offers to crash at someone’s house. In the state of Florida, which I have lived in for two years, I have only had one person offer me a place to crash. Now you tell me, is Florida The South?

20131123_223517

So we go to this bar after dinner called Broadway Brewhouse. The special is the Bushwacker. Now if your like me, your immediate thought is of the best tag team wrestling duo of all time but instead you get a heavily alcoholic drink that tastes like a Frosty.

The Existential

The Existential

At some point I decide I need more cash. So I head to the ATM. Withdraw $100. What does the ATM do? It recognizes my significant appearance and gives me $120 instead. #Winning.

My adventures in Nashville are already reaching a top notch high so I am not sure what could compete. I am content with the night but a karaoke bar on the outside of the main drag keeps getting brought up. What is this bar you ask? They call it Santa’s Pub. What’s so special about it?

IMG_3682

It is a Christmas themed bar in a double wide trailer. I am going to be honest with you. This is 100% the best business model of all time. No overhead. What’s so special about the place. For one, the owner actually looks like Santa Claus. For two, if it’s your first time there, the first beer is free. Thirdly, I am not sure thridly is actually a word. Fourth, its a double wide trailer with 200+ people raging harder than any club you’ve ever been. Seriously.

IMG_3667

Karaoke got out of hand.

IMG_3675

The decor got out of hand.

IMG_3666

And partying got out of hand.

IMG_3687

The next morning we get brunch at The Stone Fox.

IMG_3690

Ok so enough for Nashville. Lets get on to the second day of my nine day vacation. Back to wrestling. It just so happens that tonight is the 2013 Survivor Series Pay Per View. My buddy Jager is the one guy I can always count on to see every wrestling pay per view at a moment’s notice with me. So what do I do. I fucking drive to CinciNasty from Nastyville and watch the thing with him!

20131124_200243

I look like a junkie in this picture. I hate it.

I crash at his parents place with him for the second time. The last time was also wrestling related. No big deal. Somehow I convinced Chris to go along with this epic road trip and he’s all in. The bad part about this, I have to drop him off in Louisville in the am the next day and I had previously made plans with his ex girlfriend that same day. I can’t help it that I am friends with both and it was like being in a custody battle between the two. Even worse, the plan with her and I was to go on a hiking trail in Cincinnati. So I have to drive an hour and a half one way, then another hour and half back in the same direction. FML. At least the second time I take the back roads.

IMG_3691

So my hidden agenda that Lyndsey was unaware of was the fact that I was also working on my collection of State Road Signs. So we took a 15 minute pitstop at the Ohio state border to get a picture(see my other categories for the photo). The shitty part was that the Chrysler 200 had a curved hood and I couldn’t accurately sit my camera on it for a time photo. So I Macgyver the hell out of the situation. I found a broken mirror on the ground and set my camera up appropriately. It’s funny because I think of Ohio being one of the most depressing states in the union and the photo with the grey skies that I took accurately portrays that ideology.

IMG_3696

Ok so the actual hiking trail. I knew this was something Lynds would for sure be into. Plus I am all about whatever adventure comes my way. The place was called Shawnee Lookout and it is located between the Miami River and the Ohio River. Better yet, the views the park offers allows you to look into Indiana and Ohio simultaneously. If only a man could live once, how could he pass up looking into the best two states simultaneously.

IMG_3708

Ok so we do the hiking things. Paths diverge. When I jog daily I always veer right. Today I felt liberal so we went left. It’s all the same shit however you look at it. It is beautiful seeing the Ohio Valley Region in the winter time, but I was already starting to miss the 80+ degree weather of Florida.

IMG_3717

We tried to take an awesome picture overlooking the rivers and the states but the timer messed up.

IMG_3721

Afterwards, the adventure still feels fresh and the day is young? What should we do? So we head to CinciNasty. There’s a local beer place on the river next to the Reds stadium called the Moerlien. We get some awesome dinner and a brewski. Head back to Louisville. Drop Lynds off. Then drive for another hour to my moms house in Georgetown. By this point I am completely ready for bed.

Ok so its Tuesday, my mom’s a teacher so she still has to go to work on Thanksgiving week. I sleep for 14 hours but by afternoon I am bored with the lack of activities in Georgetown, Kentucky. So I head to Lexington to see some old friends.

20131126_133123

I meet up with my buddy Gornto and we go vinyl shopping. I shouldn’t be vinyl shopping as I have packed all of my outdoor hunting gear in my carry on and have no room left to travel back. Regardless, I buy a vinyl chronologizing the blues sounds of Cincinnati in the 1920’s(I ended up leaving this at my mom’s house. Pretty upset about not having it now). Afterwards we head to the local non starbucks coffee place in Lexington and catchup on life. Good times. I head home and crash early again as all of the traveling is starting to catch up with me.

20131127_142833

Wednesday a snow storm hits, of course, haven’t seen snow in two years and we are going to get it one of the nine days I’m in Kentucky. It’s actually quite beautiful and doesn’t get to cold or turn to ice like it normally does so I don’t mind.

IMG_3729

So now it’s time to go to Indiana to see my dad. First time seeing him since April 2012. I haven’t been to his house in even longer than that. But he promised me that if we went out on Thanksgiving that I would see a deer. The photo above is his statement to prove this.

Typical Indiana

Typical Indiana

I am not sure how Indiana doesn’t suffer that grey sky syndrome that Kentucky suffers but I promise you that once you cross that Mason Dixon line the skies instantly become blue. It is a phenomenon I don’t understand.

IMG_3734

So I go out for several hours on Thanksgiving day and don’t even see a damn squirrel. Not only that, but its fucking 14 degrees with a windchill of 8. Yeah. Florida boy don’t like that. And to suffer through it and not see a damn thing. It was very disappointing. Disappointing to the fact that only a 1.75 of turkey could only take care of it.

IMG_3743

So we go home and have ham instead of deer. I show my dad new technologies like Spotify and pass out. Then it’s Friday. Time to sleep in a little and then drive back to Kentucky for my final day of vaca. When  I get back I meet up with my former roommate, get some dinner and then meet up with several old friends at some of the local watering holes.

IMG_3745

Before too long its time to head to the Houndmouth homecoming show at Headliners. Fortunately, I am good friends with the band and the manager so I was able to get into the sold out show. It was amazing to say the least.

IMG_3747

Afterwards, we head to a local bar that is a private party for the band only and things got wild. My last day in Kentucky was a day to remember and it makes me homesick to think of all of those good times. But fuck that 14 degree weather.

#31 – Ribfest (Saint Petersburg, Florida)

IMG_3656

For my next adventure I didn’t have to go far from home. Ribfest is an annual shindig held on the shores of the Tampa Bay in downtown Saint Pete. Last year I was tried to make the event but for personal reasons I was unable to make it.

IMG_3643

Just walking to the event is a jaw dropping as you get to see all of the yachts parked along the shore.

IMG_3646

Once inside, there are plenty of family oriented events and some of the coolest looking inflatables man has ever seen.

IMG_3651

By this point in the day my hunger was taking over and I was ready for the ribs. After all this is Ribfest. PorkyNBeans was the choice due to having the shortest lines. It did not let down. I was even able to convince the workers to hook me up with beans and Mac&Cheese instead of the coleslaw. I’m not a slaw guy.

IMG_3654

The food was incredible and I think it even made me a believer in ribs.

IMG_3653

After finishing our plates we found the worlds largest trash can. No big deal.

IMG_3657

After finishing we found some friends, settled down and enjoyed the sounds of Sister Hazel and the Edgar Winter Band. I am still in shock by how this whole festivity even fit downtown but it was a worthwhile day. Sorry to my readers for the shortness of this article, it was a last minute thing without much detail paid for writing efforts.

#30 – Fantasy Fest (Key West, Florida)

IMG_3623

It had been a few months since I had a vacation day and I was in desparate need to get out the city. Good thing a trip planned to visit the annual Halloween festivities in Key West known as Fantasy Fest had been previously arranged. My travel party this time would include a friend from home, a coworker and his wife. We decided to take the Friday leading into the festive weekend off and head down early in the AM.

IMG_3459

Best way to get to Key West, drive!

As with every vacation I plan, the haul at work seemed to be overloaded the day before and nothing was going right. When I was finally able to escape work, I had a softball game in Saint Pete that left me totally exhausted and in need of a drink of bourbon. This made the early morning trek to the Keys even harder to wake up for but nothing keeps me away from one of my favorite places on Earth.

On the way we decided it was imperative to stop at the Islamorada Fish Company and pick up some necessary fishing gear. The store is overwhelming and everything you would expect a Bass Pro Shop in the Florida Keys to be.

IMG_3462

For the full Keys experience it is important that you camp instead of staying in a hotel. This was precisely what we were doing on Sugarloaf Key in the KOA campgrounds. The campground was actually very nice and taken care of very well. I overheard some gentlemen in the restroom saying that the place had been rundown in the past 10 years but it was all I needed to survive. Maybe they were just getting old.

IMG_3466

Fishing was our only slated item for Friday evening. My coworker and his wife wanted to hit Key west, so my buddy and I ventured off to No Name Key to find some good fishing. What we found instead were the endangered Key Deer. A six point buck even walked right up to us while we were fishing off of the bridge.

IMG_3493

When the sun started to set our stomachs let us know of their starvation and that it was time to find the hidden pizza place that the sun baked stoner at the fishing store told us to seek out. We had to stop for a few minutes beforehand to play with the ever-so-friendly Key Deer.

IMG_3506

The hidden pub was an absolute hit. We ordered a pizza with fresh Key shrimp and pineapples on it, had some local beers, and even bought some pint glasses to remind us of this one day forgotten trip.

IMG_3507

But when in the Keys, you have to do the Keys. So after settling up we headed to check out the Friday night Fantasy Fest activities in Key West. I have been to the Keys several times in my almost 26 years, but never have I seen it as packed as it was on this night. And I have visited on New Year’s Eve(That’s another story for another time).

IMG_3510

So when on Duval St. I have the same routine I seem to almost always follow religiously due to my introvert~edness and desire to explore, which is to do a lap or two from one end to the other. There was some wild shit going on to say the least.

IMG_3511

Saturday morning was set for some serious Florida Keys Lobstering action. We had a boat reserved and our snorkeling gear ready. Wouldn’t you know it, there was a small craft advisory? How about that for some horse shit. This minor detail wouldn’t deter us from our planned vacation. So we geared up and jumped right in off shore.

IMG_3526

My traveling buddies didn’t seem to acknowledge the fact that I had never been snorkeling so while I was in an epic battle more fierce than the Battle of Evermore with some serious seaweed, they were 100 yards out actually catching lobster.

IMG_3529

Their fun was shortlived as the goggles on my buddy’s mask busted into his face. Seriously. I have never seen anything like that. The goggles literally shattered in his face. We showered up and went back to the tent to catch an afternoon nap before the main Fantasy Fest Festivities.

IMG_3539

Upon awakening covered in more sweat than my body has ever produced we prepped for Halloween unlike any Halloween prepping has ever been prepped. Ok, exageration. But we did go all in. Fantasy Fest is the annual Halloween event held in Key West to promote tourism. It has been going on for over 30 years. Each year has its own theme. This year’s theme, superheros. It is also widely known that Key West is one of the most gay cities in America. So I asked myself, how many opportunities will I have in life to dress up as the Ambiguously Gay Duo and roam around Key West. Yolo!

IMG_3568

After paying an absurd amount for parking, we posted up on Duval Street next to a roadside bar and prepped ourselves for the parade. Everyone kept telling me that the parade for Mardi Gras is much more explicit which was disheartening to learn but now know it is something to add to my bucket list.

IMG_3619

There was this lawyer chick from Key Largo that kept hitting on all us and offering rum from her flask which might have contained roofies. She was interesting enough to keep around until her dbag boyfriend came up and told us we were gay for wearing our costumes. What a turd burglar. We ditched them, caught some condoms from the floats and went on our merry way.

IMG_3635

Nights in Key West get hazy so I wont go into the remainder of details for the night. The next morning we woke early due to the blazing sun, packed up and did some more serious fishing. Didn’t catch much but had a blast and darkened my beautiful skin some.

#29 – Tampa Bay Rays In The Playoffs (Saint Petersburg, Florida)

20131004_162913

Day 1 partying on the 10th floor

Spending most of my life in Kentucky the joy of being in a city when your home team makes a professional playoff was something I never got to experience. Living in Saint Petersburg not only fulfills this missing joy, but it does it with a powerful punch. Ok, so maybe that’s a lie. It isn’t even fair to call Tampa Bay fans fair weather fans. However, arguably the Rays are one of the best teams in the majors.

Game 2 at Fergs

Game 2 at Fergs

Unfortunately, the Rays were paired up with the Red Sox in my first MLB playoff experience. Game 1, which was played in Boston, can only be described as a travesty. My office shutdown an hour early on that Friday afternoon and let up watch the game on the big screen in the conference room overlooking the bay, the city and the Trop.

Saint Pete roads closed down for the affair

Saint Pete roads closed down for the Game 3 affair

Game 2 was also played in Boston. But Fergs was in full affect. It was unbelievable how packed the game day bar was for an away. The game wasn’t pretty but me and a buddy enjoyed one of the last available tables at the watering hole.

IMG_3419

I wasn’t sure if a Game 4 was possible so I only purchased two tickets for Game 3. We decided to drive their from our downtown office. That was a mistake. Parking was insane. We would have been better off just walking from the office because we ended up walking just as far from where we ended up paying $20 to park.

After the walk off

After the walk off

Downtown was unexplainable. One of the best experiences of my life. I couldn’t believe my entire city getting behind something so big. Baseball is new to me so I really appreciated it. Better yet, the game was really close until a Walkoff Homerun hit a few rows in front of me sealed a Game 4. The barely packed Trop erupted. I wish every Rays game was an intense but unfortunately the fans in Florida don’t care that much. The Rays would end up losing Game 4 but left a hunger for next season in my mouth.
